The historic pictorial process of landscape painting elicits a certain reaction from the viewer toward beauty and the moment. In my current project, I am subverting this history to call into question modern notions of beauty and the sublime by including secondary subject matter that is not considered picturesque road-kill. This is the refuse of our contemporary mechanized society. I see this subject matter as highlighting mans impression on nature; a subject that challenges what is beautiful and what is sanctified in todays culture. The juxtaposition of lush drawing and sculpture set against the difficult subject of death creates an opportunity for viewer reflection and identification.
